Voters will head to the polls on Tuesday, Nov. 7 to decide on a number of local mayoral, city council races, levies and bonds across Idaho. Early voting is available in most counties until Friday, Nov. 3. On election day, Nov. 7, polls will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. In Cassia county the question of changing the way the Oregon Trail Recreation District is funded. In Jerome county a super majority is needed for the construction of a new public recreation and senior center. There is a supplemental levy for school district 331 in Minidoka, Cassia, Jerome and Lincoln Counties.


Timber Roberts, who illegally lived on public lands in Idaho for three years, and assaulted and threatened federal officers, received his sentencing Monday. Timber was sentenced to five and a half months in prison, of which the presiding judge in the case deemed "time served." Meanwhile, Timber's brother, Brooks, still has a $50 million tort claim pending against the government because of how officers handled the arrest - which resulted in him being shot by responding officers and ultimately paralyzed.


Former Idaho State Representative Aaron Von Ehlinger was convicted last year of raping a 19-year-old legislative intern in 2021. He filed an appeal in July of 2023. His legal team claimed that remarks made by a nurse who testified about the victim's statements in the trial should be inadmissible. The Idaho Supreme Court will need to decide if it will hear the case.


The fight over Idaho's abortion laws continued in court this week. The State filed a motion to dismiss the Center for Reproductive Rights lawsuit. Using court precedent from a previous case, the motion to dismiss states the Center for Reproductive Rights does not have grounds to sue because Idaho's Supreme Court already ruled the state constitution does not contain a right to abortion.


Parties to a lawsuit challenging the federal government over its plans to continue operating dams on the Snake River at the expense of salmon runs asked a federal court in Oregon for more time to negotiate with one another. During the next 45 days, the parties will continue to hash out a plan to save imperiled salmon and deal with the Snake River dams outside of the courtroom.
