Fire destroyed a Pallet facility in Heyburn yesterday morning at around 10:30. Crews were called to 630 south and 200 west where fire was quickly spreading through the Maybey’s yard. Three outbuildings were destroyed and the flames could be seen for miles. No injuries were reported and the cause is unknown at this time. 8 fire departments responded to the scene.


As millions of Americans brace for a busy Labor Day weekend on the roads and at the airports. AAA projects a 9% increase in this weekend’s holiday travel from a year ago. Gas prices will help Idaho drivers hit the road, with the state’s average price for a gallon of regular at $3.60, which is three cents more than a month ago but 53 cents less than a year ago. Meanwhile, the national average sits at $3.36 per gallon.


Idaho Gov. Brad Little signed an executive order yesterday aimed to oppose changes to the Biden administration’s final rule for Title IX. The final rule took effect this month, but Idaho is one of 26 states where state officials sued the Biden administration over the changes, and have thus blocked it from taking effect. Enacted in1972 it prevented sex-based discrimination on any educational program that received federal funding including LGBTQ students.


The Lower Stanley community has been evacuated as the Wapiti fire continues to burn. 80,000 acres are charred and its 0% contained. State Highway 21 is closed in the area.


The Sawtooth Salmon Festival has been cancelled due to all of the wildfire activity in the area. Idaho Rivers United & the Sawtooth Association made the announcement but said the fest should be back next year.


U.S. Rep. Mike Simpson, U.S. Sens. Mike Crapo and Jim Risch are hosting senior center outreach opportunities. They plan to visit most all senior centers in Southern Idaho starting September 4th to answer questions.


SPORTS


The Castleford Wolves are coming off of a campaign where the team hung in the playoff race until late in the season despite an exceedingly young roster. Of the 18 players listed on Brian Lowry’s 2023 roster, eleven were freshmen. So, entering 2024, the Wolves begin the transition to “young but experienced” as they look to return to the 1A state playoffs. Lowry, entering his eighth season as the program’s head coach, and his staff have to replace a pair of first team All-State performers on defense – lineman Cache Keetch and defensive back Jayme Ramos. The two combined for more than 180 tackles with Keetch notching 16 sacks and Ramos intercepting seven passes.

The Declo Hornets have been one of Idaho’s pre-eminent 3A football programs over the past decade-plus. Declo has appeared in six state championship games over the past twelve seasons, winning four. 2023 was one of those years where Declo had to settle for second place. After defeating West Side in a hotly contested regular season battle, the Pirates exacted revenge in the title matchup with a 41-13 triumph. Those squads will now be conference mates, as Declo and Wendell of District 4 are combining with West Side, Aberdeen, Soda Springs and Malad from District 5 to form the six-team South East Idaho Conference.

The Vandal soccer team is at home this week where they will face IU Indianapolis on Thursday, August 29th at 7:00 p.m. in the P1FCU Kibbie Dome. The game will be streamed on ESPN+. On Sunday night, the Vandals were once again on the road to take on Washington State.

The Idaho State soccer team had their home-opener for the 2024 season on Wednesday evening, hosting the Oregon State Beavers for the teams' second-ever matchup. Idaho state lost to Oregon 1 to 0.

From the scoreboard, yesterday in Boys soccer, Kimberly outlasted Declo 3 to 0. For the Girls Kimberly took the win over Declo 10 to 1.

On the sports schedule for today, first for football, Shoshone will travel to Hagerman to play the JV team.

On the boys soccer schedule, Preston travels to Burley, Hillcrest will be on the road to play Canyon Ridge. Wood River will be in Mountain Home and Pocatello goes to Twin Falls and Declo boards the bus to Minico.

For the Girls, Declo travels to Minico while Jerome is on the road to Caldwell. Wood River goes to Middleton and Twin Falls heads to Pocatello to play Highland.
