Today many southern Idaho residents will remember what happened on this date in history. September 11th, or 9-11 was the day terrorist suicide attacks were carried out against the US where 29 hundred and 77 people were killed, not counting the terrorists. Today, ceremonies are being conducted in many local communities including Twin Falls where a large flag will be hung over the canyon that will stretch to the Jerome side.
Nine presidential candidates, including five independent candidates, have qualified to appear on Idaho’s 2024 ballot. Independent candidates Shiva Ayyadurai, Claudia De la Cruz, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Jill Stein and Randall Terry all qualified to appear on the ballot for Idaho’s Nov. 5 general election.
A single-vehicle accident occurred early yesterday morning in Jerome. Two people an adult male and a male juvenile were injured when their Jeep rolled over on west main in Jerome near the freeway exit. It happened around 6:45 am. The victims suffered cuts and bruises and were not ejected. The driver has been charged with driving under the influence.
Kind Idaho is launching a petition to put a vote to decriminalize personal marijuana use on the 2026 ballot. This would be the third time for putting a marijuana initiative on Idaho’s ballot. The group has tried to get Medical Marijuana on the ballot but this time it’s a bit different. They hope to decriminalize personal use, production or growth.
The Castleford schools are closed today. The district said it’s due to a broken water pipe. The sporting events will continue as scheduled.
The weather is changing. Forecasters say today a strong low pressure system will cause strong thunderstorms. It’s expected to hit southwest Idaho and could cause some low level flooding with heavy rain. Winds could hit up to 60 miles an hour.
So far, the frog fire burning off the east fork of the salmon river has burned 1380 acres. Officials expect the fire to spread toward structures. Winds may also push the fire beyond Little and Big Boulder Creek drainages.
SPORTS
Going into the 2023 season, the expectations for the Twin Falls Bruins were as high as they have been in the last several years. Not only did the Bruins live up to the expectations, they did so in dominating fashion in the Great Basin Conference outscoring great basin conference opponents 243-85 in their matchups while going 5-0. However, after a disappointing second round exit in the state playoffs to Skyline, the Bruins are hungry for a big 2024 season. Despite losing 2x All-State RB Wyatt Solosabal, the Bruins will still be a physical run first offense. Coach Ben Kohring, returning for his fifth season at the helm, says the offense will “pride itself on ball control and red zone efficiency.”
When the Valley Vikings re-entered the 8-man ranks after a short foray in 11-man football, people around the program quietly whispered, “just wait.” The 2022 team was very young, going just 1-7 overall and finishing last in the 1A Division 1 Snake River Conference. In 2023, the Vikings won five regular-season games, qualified for the state playoffs, and won their opening-round game in Hazelton against a good Potlatch team before falling in the quarterfinals to eventual state champion Butte County.
On the scoreboard, for boys soccer, Jerome downed Mountain Home 1 to 0. Twin Falls took the win over Burley 3 to 0. For the girls, Twin Falls shut out Burley 12 to 0. Hillcrest took the win over Canyon Ridge 5 to 0. Mountain Home bested Jerome 6 to 1. Wood River downed Minico 8 to 1.
In volleyball games, Buhl defeated Filer 3 to 1. Kimberly defeated Gooding 3 to 0. Wood River for the win over Burley 3 to 0.
On today’s soccer schedule, first for the boys, Declo travels to Bliss, Filer heads to Buhl, Kimberly heads north to the Sun Valley Community School. Gooding goes to Wendell.
For the girls, Declo goes to Bliss, Filer to Buhl, Kimberly to the sun valley community school, Gooding to Wendell.
On the volleyball schedule, Hagerman goes to the Sun Valley community school, Shoshone to Valley. Dietrich travels to Carey, Richfield to Castleford, Camas County to Hansen, Grace to Murtaugh, Oakley to Rockland.
